Last August we kicked off the construction of the first two homes in Deland Pointe, A Habitat Neighborhood with a community-wide blitz build. Volunteer teams from partner businesses and individual community volunteers came together to raise the walls and enclose two houses in less than a week!
We started the week with “First Responders Day”. Fire fighters, police officers, and hospital workers from the City of Jackson, Michigan State Police, and Henry Ford Hospital in Jackson joined our regular construction volunteers and Habitat staff to raise the walls of the first house.
The rest of the week, volunteers from the following organizations joined in:
True Community Credit Union
Jackson Area Association of Realtors
Business and Professional Women
Tedders Family Dentistry
Jackson Chamber of Commerce
Habitat for Humanity of Michigan
With nearly 150 people on site collectively throughout the week, 5,250 volunteer hours were logged and two houses were constructed. It was a sight to behold and the highlight of my career so far at Habitat!
Because of you, our supporters, two families (nine people) now have an affordable, safe home that will provide stability and create equity for generations to come.
Greater Jackson Habitat for Humanity staff and board are hosting an open house for these two houses so that you can see the fruits of your labor. This event is open to the public. Please stop by and take a tour before the families take ownership and move in.
We’re ready to begin building the next two houses, which will go up on the lots directly to the west of these two. If you would like to be involved, let us know by filling out the volunteer interest form on our website. And if you’d like to support the builds with a financial gift, the link to donate is here. Or you’re welcome to send a check to us at Greater Jackson Habitat for Humanity, 251 W. Prospect, Jackson, MI 49203.
I hope to see you on May 13 or 14!
